Isaiah 59:14-15: “Justice is turned back, and righteousness stands far away; For truth has stumbled in the public squares, And uprightness cannot enter. Truth is lacking, And he who departs from evil makes himself a prey.”
Comment 1: This Trump trial, along with all the others, is a politically motivated hit job. This most recent decision was a travesty of justice, with the DA and judge complicit in railroading the trial, manipulating witnesses, and instructing the jury to suit their political interests driven by a deep hatred for Trump. It was a dark day for the American justice system and us as a people, one from which we may not recover.
Comment 2: God can use unjust judges, juries, and DAs to bring about His righteous ends. Trump stated after the verdict, “I am a very innocent man.” Perhaps in regards to the charges brought, but what about the adultery, the pro-homosexual agenda (Trump said he was “greatly honored” to be considered the “most pro-gay president in history”), the pro-abortion inclinations (up to 15 weeks seems “very reasonable”—see the picture below to decide if it is, in fact, “very reasonable”), and Fauci’s Operation Warp Speed, which imposed an untested vaccine on the world and locked it down, closed churches, and created the inflation mess we find ourselves in (and yes, Biden doubled down, but the inflation mess was largely caused by Trump’s reaction).
Perhaps most grievous are not these sins, but Trump’s arrogant and repeated assertions that he does not need forgiveness. When asked if he has ever asked God for forgiveness, Trump said, “I’m not sure I have. I just go on and try to do a better job from there. I don’t think so. I think if I do something wrong, I think I just try and make it right. I don’t bring God into that picture. I don’t.”
In a separate interview with Cal Thomas, Trump was asked: “You have said you never felt the need to ask for God’s forgiveness, and yet repentance is a precondition to salvation. I ask you the question Jesus asked of Peter: Who do you say He is?”
Trump responded: “I will be asking for forgiveness, but hopefully I won’t be asking for much forgiveness.”
So yes, it is a dark day in America because of the travesty of justice we all just watched, but it is also a dark day because of the full-throated embrace by many evangelicals of a leader who, while inarguably better than Biden, could rightly be considered the just judgment of God on a church that no longer pants after God but for America as it was. I feel it too. But there is no hope for that in Trump. Our hope must be for a nation “Whose God is the Lord.” Repentance – Revival – Rebirth. This is our only hope. Always has been.
A final call to action: I’m not saying don’t vote for Trump (definitely don’t vote for Biden). But I am saying don’t set your hope on Trump—he is not the hero, the messiah, the answer. He might help stave off momentarily the leap into the abyss our country seems hell-bent on, but he cannot save us. I am saying set your hope in God. Humble yourself under His mighty hand. Confess your own sin to Him. Acknowledge your own need for His forgiveness. And boldly share the beauty of this Great God with your friends and loved ones. And perhaps God would be gracious to deliver our precious country once again. “Why so downcast, oh my soul? Put your hope in God!”
